Graceville House is an adapted federation bungalow.
Its attention to detail and craft, articulation of ceiling lines and unusual room sizes allows us to be extremely playful in our exploration of shape and form.
An exaggerated geometry is employed in a series of customised built-in elements.
A tiled fireplace, upholstered seating and hidden cocktail bar create a sequence of flexible and highly functional additions that encourage interaction and socialisation.
Designer inclusions elevate the final outcome - a Borge Mogensen Spanish Chair in oak and tan leather, Lane tiles by Barber & Osgerby for Mutina and stunning hand forged light fixtures by LAAL.
Bespoke handmade timber pieces by Byron Bay artist Lex Williams combine functional and sculptural elements.
Pattern is by Oat Studio, adding a fresh and youthful energy to the overall design.

A highly considered spatial layout merges adjacent apartments on the 13th floor of an iconic 1974 high rise, creating a multi-layered space consisting of three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a studio.
The original Architect, JV Rubis, is responsible for a number of early multi-residential developments, this building being Brisbane’s second oldest high-rise.
With a rhythmic repetition of arched windows, the Architect presents clear cues that formulate the foundation of our design.
Following on from these architectural elements, the arch works as an abstraction, allowing for openness, but obscuring areas for privacy when needed.
Distinctive materials have been employed throughout. Marble, Venetian Plaster, Oak, Brass & Concrete bring varying levels of gloss, texture and sheen.
The Primary Suite encompasses an open plan bathroom atop a raised platform. The open design takes full advantage of its high level location, enveloping the space in a spectacular cityscape. The bathroom also works as a transition point, revealing a private salon style lounge and walk-in robe.
The Hallway, Kitchen and Dining are connected through a highly customised joinery piece that wraps the space and cleverly intersects, defining space and creating key functions.
Expansive city views add a dramatic backdrop to the open living.
A second three-way bathroom is created using varying tiles in a geometric colour combination, as a playful reminder of the building’s original heritage.
The design outcome presents a unique space with a considered approach to finish selection and joinery design. Furniture and furnishings are curated and customised to support this design methodology, celebrating the heritage of the building and its connection to the city and river views.

Hendra House consists of the original Post-War structure, a contemporary extension and a walkway that eases the transition between old and new.
There is a strong geometry to the floor plan that encourages multiplicity of function. This dictated by its bold angles and the way in which the two main structures interact, creating a clear understanding of ‘zoning’ that also manages to keep the clutter of family life under control.
The kid’s zone is housed within the original structure, with parents retreat and communal living in the extension. A transparent walkway allows connection to both zones and the streetscape, featuring a joinery unit that encourages exploration on the journey between zones.
A simple finishes palette reflects the architecture. Terracotta references the heritage of the area in a unconventional way that is both nostalgic and uniquely Brisbane.
The various apertures and openings draw glimpses of the surrounding terracotta roof lines into the interiors.
The kitchen island, clad in terracotta, continues this thread, finding inspiration from the Arts and Crafts movement and its philosophy of modest form and craftsmanship.

The extension to this 4 room cottage in Wilston aims to maximize the use of the double-block, while using the existing structure to help generate a new spatial relationship between the master’s suite and the other bedrooms. The design presents a clean, contemporary building with bold formal gestures that partially sit within the footprint of the existing residence. The new addition aims to take advantage of natural light by creating a number of unique apertures towards chosen aspects of the park and surrounds.
The interior consists of custom designed joinery and built in furniture. The aim of this is to create a compact spatial layout that maximises functionality throughout day to day activities.
The palette also works to draw the exterior view into the interior.

Located in one of Brisbane's heritage wool stores, this warehouse space accommodates both home and artist’s studio. The design captures the historical integrity of the wool store.
The unadorned, heightened and industrial space allows for an honest interior that places emphasis on its strong and dynamic architectural features: original oak flooring, exposed wooden and steel trussed, traditional brick, architectural ceiling details and oversized sash windows.
The amount of natural light filling the space allows for a dramatic selection of materials. The high end finish and authenticity of the materials counterbalance the grittier design elements of the pre-existing space.

The Roma Farmhouse Addition sits high amongst large expanses of farmland and serves as the home base of the property owners.
The new entry point/outdoor room seeks to provide an entertaining area where family and friends can enjoy the stunning country vistas that the house is afforded. The design aims to provide a space to sit on the fringes and enjoy the views.
The design concept is about ‘bringing the outside in’. This is achieved through the manipulation of ground plane that connects to the outdoors, while offering protection in the form of a thin permeable membrane that can peel away if desired. These elements create a space that is a sanctuary and hub for a large or intimate group of people in a vast expanse of space.

With New Farm Boutique Accomodation Wrightson Stewart have aimed to establish a series of interior moments that expand on the contemporary design theories created by Channon Architects.
Our objective was to highlight the heritage details of a traditional inner-city workers cottage.
This has been achieved through the juxtaposition of wall panelling; traditional v-j’s and tiling details with contemporary light fixtures, joinery handles, tap ware and furnishings.
A cool colour palette has been engaged to create a sense of intimacy and familiarity.
Nostalgic and playful moments have been created throughout, including perforated mesh inlays to joinery; shower curtains to ensuite shower areas and shaker-style door detailing.
All guest rooms include built-in storage concepts that incorporate luggage drop off and a mini-bar area concealed behind cabinetry.
Creating a design for accommodation is also about creating a memorable experience.
This allows us to push the boundaries further than that of an owner occupied dwelling.
